In the Spotlight

MiHR's inaugural mining student photo contest results are in! And the winners are..

This fall, MiHR launched a new photo contest for post-secondary mining students on our Mining Students of Canada Facebook page. This contest engaged the mining student community and provided a platform for students to share their work and co-op experiences in the Canadian mining industry in a creative format. The contest asked students to showcase their love of mining and photography by posting their best original photos to the Mining Students of Canada Facebook Wall and was open to any student studying a mining related discipline in a Canadian post-secondary institution.

Students had the option of submitting photos in four distinct categories: Techno-Mine; Safety First!; Adventures in Mining; and Mining with Integrity. The contest was a success! There were 28 original photo entries received and students from across Canada voted for their favourite photo in each category by 'liking' the photo on the Mining Students of Canada Facebook wall. The contest closed on October 7th, 2011 and the winners of each category receive a $50 Mountain Equipment Co-op Gift Card.

And the winners are...

Techno-Mine: Raja Yarra, Brock University, for his picture of St. Andrew Goldfields, Hislop Mine

Safety First: Meaghan Francis, Brock University, for her picture of Pickle Lake, Ontario Geological Survey

Adventures in Mining: Meaghan Francis for her picture of a double rainbow over Noront Esker Camp. Congratulations Meaghan for winning two of the four categories!

Mining with Integrity: Anthony Bauer for his picture that illustrates the reclamation of oil sands land as pasture land

Congratulations to all three winners! Click here to view the winning photos! To view all entries, visit the Mining Students of Canada Facebook Page.

The Problem

Many high school students are avoiding math and cutting off pathways to exciting technical careers before they even know about them. High school curriculum has few "real-world" applied problems. Leaders in industry and government worry about coming skills shortages, especially in technical areas.

The Solution

BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology) is developing an online database using Maple TA software, tied to the high school curriculum, of real-world math problems. They expect these rich and broad applications to the many fields of science, health, engineering and technology, will encourage and even inspire students to consider and explore careers in science and technology.

Resource for teachers!

The Year of Science, a website created by the province of British Columbia, is a site dedicated to all things science and all things fun, for kids! The site features excellent resources, including profiles of people whose jobs are science-related, regular polls on science questions, videos on science in action and a calendar of events with the latest on events at museums, etc. The site also offers an exciting contest, 'Choose science. Go far. Win Big,' which challenges students to develop great ideas for cool science experiments, inventions or innovative methods for myth busting for a chance to win big prizes!
